Lymphedema & Chronic Swelling Treatment

Lymphedema and Chronic Swelling Treatment in Layton and South Ogden

Persistent swelling can make everyday activities uncomfortable and frustrating. Whether your swelling developed after surgery, cancer treatment, an injury, or a chronic medical condition, specialized physical therapy can help reduce symptoms and improve your quality of life.

At Body Tune Physical Therapy and Wellness, our certified lymphedema specialists provide comprehensive treatment programs designed to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and help you return to the activities you enjoy.

What Is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to properly transport fluid throughout the body. As a result, fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing swelling, heaviness, tightness, and discomfort.

Lymphedema most commonly affects the arms and legs but can occur anywhere in the body. Some individuals develop lymphedema following cancer treatments that involve lymph node removal or radiation therapy. Others may experience chronic swelling due to surgery, trauma, venous insufficiency, or other medical conditions.

Without proper treatment, swelling can worsen over time and may increase the risk of infections, skin changes, and mobility limitations.

Why Choose Body Tune Physical Therapy and Wellness?

At Body Tune, we don’t believe in quick fixes. We believe in tune-ups—addressing movement patterns, strength, mobility, and recovery so your body can perform at its best for the long haul. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, returning to sport, or simply looking to move and feel better, our team is here to guide you every step of the way.

Your body is built to move. Let us help you keep it tuned for life.

Cancer, Surgery, and Your Lymphatic System

Cancer

Lymphedema can occur following a variety of cancer treatments (most commonly breast cancer), particularly when lymph nodes are removed, damaged, or exposed to radiation therapy. This may include cancers such as breast cancer, melanoma, gynecologic cancers (including cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer), prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, and sarcomas.

When the lymphatic system is disrupted, fluid can accumulate in the affected region—such as the legs, groin, abdomen, face, or arms—leading to swelling, heaviness, tightness, and reduced mobility. These symptoms can develop shortly after treatment or may appear months or even years later.

At Body Tune Physical Therapy and Wellness, we provide specialized lymphedema management to help reduce swelling, improve lymphatic flow, and support long-term self-management so patients can maintain function, comfort, and quality of life throughout their recovery journey.

Joint Surgeries

Lymphedema can develop following joint surgeries such as total knee replacements, hip replacements, shoulder procedures, or fracture repairs, particularly when lymphatic pathways are disrupted by surgical trauma, swelling, or prolonged inflammation during recovery. Post-surgical swelling is common in the early healing phase, but in some cases it can persist or progress into a more chronic fluid retention issue that limits mobility, increases stiffness, and slows rehabilitation progress.

Physical therapy plays an important role in managing these symptoms through techniques that promote fluid movement, reduce swelling, and restore normal joint function. At Body Tune Physical Therapy and Wellness, we help patients recover from joint surgeries by addressing both the mechanical and lymphatic components of healing, supporting a smoother recovery and improved long-term outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions
